The Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Department (FRES) is dedicated to providing the best possible service to both Suffolk County's 1.5 million residents and the more than 10,000 first responders. The general responsibilities of the Suffolk County Fire Marshal's Office (FMO) include inspections and building code compliance activities, fire investigation, public education, technical response assistance to Suffolk County fire and emergency agencies, staffing various positions within the county's incident management structure, and supporting emergency management operations. In accordance with New York State law, fire inspectors in the Fire Prevention Division are building safety inspectors certified by the State of New York and are responsible for inspecting all commercial buildings in the City of Brookhaven, without requiring an annual inspection, at least once every three years. Fire Chiefs enforce local, state and national fire prevention and construction codes, laws and regulations.
